UNSOM Hails Somali Activist for Role in Transforming Galkayo to Peaceful Town

United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) has acknowledged the role that a young Somali activist has played in transforming Galkayo into a peaceful town.

UNSOM highlighted Bashiir Mohamed Abdulkadir Suuley has played in Galkayo’s transformation thus far.

The organization mentioned Suuley in its latest report on January 21.

It spoke about the history of Galkayo as a town full of conflict and displacement for decades.

Long-running deadly and violent clashes between clan militias from Puntland and Galmudug played a crucial role in Galkayo’s reputation as a conflict-ridden town.

The 31-year old says that he was in Galkayo during the city’s darkest moments of violence and conflicts.

Suuley established an initiative with the help of his friends to agitate for peace in Galkayo.

He also used the initiative as a vehicle for raising awareness among the youth to convince them to be agents of peace.
