UNSOM Urges Somalia to Embrace Freedom of Expression in Preparation for Polls

United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) has urged Somalia’s political leaders to embrace freedom of expression as the country prepares for elections later this year.

Somalia is scheduled to hold local and parliamentary elections in December 2020 followed by presidential polls in February 2021.

A statement issued by UNSOM on Friday, October 23, urged the Federal Government of Somalia to keep the country’s political space open for all.

It also urged the government, and all political leaders, to allow for diversity of views and voices as elections draw near.

Further, the organization reminded the people and government of Somalia, including all political parties, that divergence of opinion is a crucial component of the democratic process.
