Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) soldiers were arrested in Somalia for the recent killing of seven civilians.
President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda confirmed this latest development on August 22.
The UPDF soldiers are part of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) troops working in Somalia to secure the country from militants.
Two weeks ago, AMISOM’s UPDF contingent killed seven people they initially believed to be Al-Shabaab militants who laid out an ambush for them.
However, reports showing that the dead were civilians and not militants started emerging immediately afterward.
AMISOM promised to launch investigations into the matter.
Their investigations confirmed that those killed were indeed civilians.
President Museveni indicated that authorities in Somalia had arrested those responsible for civilian deaths and would now proceed to charge them in court.
