Abdi Hashi Abdullahi, the Speaker of the Upper House, has faulted the decision by the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) to appoint members to the electoral commission.
On Sunday, November 1, Speaker Hashi issued a press statement faulting the government’s role in appointing members into the electoral commission.
The electoral commission is important in supervising the elections of Members of Parliament.
Parliamentary elections are scheduled to kick off in November 2020.
These would then be followed by Presidential Elections in February 2021.
In September, the National Consultative Conference featuring FGS and Federal Member States (FMS) agreed to appoint electoral commission to supervise the upcoming polls.
National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) was exempted from playing any role in the upcoming elections.
Hashi said that the decision to leave the selection of the commission into the hands of the federal government compromises the election process.
