US Aircraft Carrier Arrives in Somalia

A United States aircraft carrier arrived in Somalia on December 21, 2020.

The aircraft carrier transported several units designed to help the Joint Task Force-Quartz (JTF-Q) whose main task is to help reposition troops withdrawn from Somalia.

United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) troops are expected to leave Somalia from January 2021 following a directive from outgoing President Donald Trump.

US Air Force Maj Gen. Dagvin Anderson, the JTF-Q Commander, said that the arrival of the aircraft carrier is designed to “support US partners.”

Maj. Gen. Anderson also mentioned that the troops would help make the transition from Somalia to other East African nations much easier.
