US Backs Efforts to Interrupt Al-Shabaab’s Finances

The government of the United States has offered to support the efforts to interrupt Al-Shabaab’s finances.

Recently, the United Nations issued a report stating that the Al-Qaeda linked group had raised and spent over $21 million in 2019 alone.

On October 28, Kelly Dawn Craft, the US Ambassador to the United Nations, informed the Security Council that her country remains committed to countering the “financing of terrorism.”

Furthermore, Ambassador Craft said that the US is ready to collaborate with other countries and global agencies to trace and freeze Al-Shabaab’s source of funds.

The Ambassador said that it is important for the international community to collaborate and ensure that Al-Shabaab does not have funds for making homemade bombs.

Al-Shabaab remains Africa’s most resilient and active extremist group.

The militia group carries out most of its attacks in Somalia. Lately, it has ramped up its attacks in the Horn of Africa nation, which is preparing for elections later in the year.
