The United States plans to recognize Somaliland’s status as a sovereign nation by the end of December 2022.
A Senior Advisor to the Somaliland Presidency broke the news on March 24.
According to the advisor, if that doesn’t happen, then the US would continue engaging Somaliland diplomatically as a de facto state that has nothing to do with Somalia.
For decades, Somalia has rejected Somaliland’s status.
Somalia claims that Somaliland is part of its territory.
Currently, the US Congress is debating a motion that MP Scott Perry drafted and presented before it to recognize Somaliland as an independent state.
