US Embassy Advices Somali Leaders to Avoid Talk of Parallel Elections

The United States Embassy in Somalia held a meeting with political leaders in the country on January 24.

During Sunday’s meeting, US officials advised the leaders to avoid any talk of holding parallel elections in the country.

Some of the leaders at the meeting include Abdikarim Hussein Guled, Hassan Ali Khaire, and Dr. Abdinasir Abdille Mohamed.

Sharif Hassan Sheikh Aden was also at the meeting.

The word from the US government was that Somalia should only prepare for universal elections around the country rather than entertain talk of parallel polls.

In addition to that, the leaders were advised on the importance of finding compromise to prepare for and hold timely, credible elections.

Furthermore, the leaders were encouraged to ensure that the country conducts peaceful non-violent elections.
