US Expresses ‘Regret’ at Farmaajo’s Handling of PM Khaire’s Ouster

The United States has expressed “regret” at the manner in which President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo handled the ouster of Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire.

On Saturday, 170 Members of Parliament (MPs) in Somalia’s Federal Parliament voted to pass the motion of no confidence against Prime Minister Khaire.

Immediately afterwards, President Farmaajo’s office announced that he had accepted parliament’s decision and would be appointing a new Prime Minister soon.

The US released a statement on Saturday in which it said the move is likely to “heighten political temperatures” in a country that is preparing for elections later this year.

Further, the US believes the decision to remove Khaire from office could “undermine” the ongoing discussions between the Federal Government of Somalia and Federal Member States.

Terming the whole process “irregular,” the US urged for political stability in Somalia.

Moreover, it said all stakeholders have to demonstrate not only “political compromise” but also “proper coordination” to keep the country politically stable.
