The government of the United States has nothing to show for the $3.5 billion that it spent on Somalia’s security, a top diplomat has said.
Ambassador Cherith Norman Chalet, US Deputy Representative to the United Nations, said this.
Ambassador Chalet added that the United States’ involvement in Somalia is yet to produce any tangible results.
She said that several terrorist groups continue to create mayhem in the East African nation.
Most of the finances have been channeled through the US Africa Command (AFRICOM), which has not stopped carrying out airstrikes against Al-Shabaab.
AFRICOM recently said it had carried out 46 drone attacks in 2020 alone in Somalia.
Insecurity remains a major issue in Somalia, a country whose government is under immense pressure to eradicate extremist groups that continue killing its citizenry.
