The United States military killed a key Islamic State leader in Somalia.
The US Africa Command (AFRICOM) carried out the attack that led to the killing of Bilal al-Sudani, a regional IS leader.
AFRICOM carried out the attack following orders from US President Joe Biden.
Sudani died on Wednesday in a successful military operation when a gunfight broke out between the US military and IS militants at a mountainous cave.
The US military sought to capture al-Sudani and other members of his militia group.
However, that proved impossible in the intense fight that claimed 10 IS fighters in northern Somalia.
Lloyd Austin, the US Secretary of Defense, confirmed this development in a statement.
He added that the US military acted on the orders of President Biden.
According to Austin, al-Sudani had been responsible for facilitating the growing presence of IS militants throughout the African continent.
He has also funded IS operations worldwide, as per the Secretary of Defense’s statement.
