The government of the United States has urged political leaders in Somalia to resolve the ongoing electoral impasse immediately.
US issued a statement on February 8 following news that last week’s National Consultative Conference on elections collapsed.
The conference lasted from February 1-5.
At the end of it, Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and Federal Member States (FMS) failed to agree a deal on elections.
As per the US statement, the failure by Somalia to make progress on the electoral impasse has interfered with the fight against Al-Shabaab.
Additionally, US mentioned Somalia’s inability to improve security, especially now that the leadership is too focused on political issues.
Al-Shabaab has taken advantage of the situation to hit various parts of the country with deadly attacks.
In its statement, US stated that Somalia’s future hinges on quickly resolving the electoral crisis.
