The United States government has urged leaders in Somalia to resume elections talks with immediate effect.
On February 9, the US Department of State sent an appeal to the leadership of the East African nation requesting them to resume talks on elections now.
This follows the breakdown of last week’s National Consultative Conference in Dhusamareb after five days of deliberations.
The Dhusamareb talks featured discussions between Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and Federal Member States (FMS).
Ned Price, the Department of State’s spokesperson, relayed this message to the Somalia leadership via video.
In his speech, Price said, “Somalia leaders must resume their dialogue urgently.”
Furthermore, the state department’s spokesperson also reminded the Horn of Africa leaders of the importance of dialogue in ensuring that “national elections take place now.”
