Two international organizations have signed an agreement to support students displaced by the ongoing drought in Somalia.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) signed the agreement with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
While signing the agreement on September 11, USAID announced that it has set aside $1.5 million for this purpose.
Both organizations have agreed to establish the Emergency Education Drought Response Programme.
Under the programme, USAID and UNICEF will target around 400,000 children of school-going age who are unable to access formal education because of the drought.
Jeffrey Bakken and Wafaa Saeed confirmed this latest development on Sunday.
Bakken is the Director of the USAID Mission in Somalia while Saeed is the UNICEF Representative to Somalia.
According to Saeed, more than 900,000 Somali children are at risk of dropping out of school.
