Veteran Somali MP Suuri Diiriye Passes Away in Mogadishu

Mogadishu — Veteran Somali parliamentarian Suuri Diiriye Arab, one of the longest-serving lawmakers in the country’s modern history, passed away in Mogadishu on Thursday night.

The news was confirmed by Senator Osman Dubbe, who shared condolences on behalf of his colleagues and the Somali people.

Suuri was among the first lawmakers elected during the historic Arta Peace Conference held in Djibouti in 2000 — a process that played a vital role in laying the groundwork for Somalia’s transitional governance structures after years of civil war.

Throughout his political career spanning more than two decades, he was highly respected across party lines for his experience, integrity, and commitment to the restoration of national unity and stability.

His passing is a profound loss to Somalia’s political landscape, where senior statesmen like Suuri have been key in shaping legislation, fostering political dialogue, and mentoring the younger generation of leaders.

Leaders across Somalia have sent heartfelt tributes to his family, praising his unwavering dedication to public service and his enduring role in Somalia’s recovery.

Funeral arrangements and further commemorations will be announced in the coming days as the nation mourns the loss of one of its veteran statesmen.
