Vietnam Urges Somalis to Elect More Women Political Leaders

Vietnam has urged Somalia to create an environment that supports the election of more women political leaders.

Nguyen Phuong Tra, Vietnam’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, made this call on September 28.

Somalia is determined to increase the number of women representatives in parliament in this year’s elections.

Tra was addressing the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) session on Tuesday.

She encouraged Somalis to ensure that women candidates win at least 30 percent of the elective seats in the country.

Further, she commended Amina Mohamed, UN’s Deputy Secretary General, for the recent visit to Somalia.

She condemned the violent acts and sexual violence experienced against women.

Tra also addressed the frequent attacks by Al-Shabaab militants against civilians and innocent government officers in the East African nation.
