The leader of opposition Wadajir Party has warned against holding illegal elections in Somalia.
Abdirahman Abdishakur, the leader of Wadajir Party, said that his party would not take part in what he called “illegal elections.”
He urged other opposition parties not to take in elections whose preparations none of them has approved.
Somalia is scheduled to hold its parliamentary elections in December 2020 followed by presidential polls in February 2021.
Abdishakur’s comments come in the wake of the implementation of recent signing of the electoral agreement between the Federal Government of Somalia and Federal Member States.
In September, both sides agreed on an electoral model, timeline, and other modalities.
A joint session between the House of Representatives and the Upper House approved the agreement, which President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo signed into law last week.
On Saturday, November 14, Abdishakur said that the opposition parties would only participate in fair and credible elections, especially in Mogadishu.
He cited the composition of the Federal Electoral Commissions (FECs) and the Dispute Resolution Commission (DRC) as evidence of “illegalities” the government has committed.
