AMISOM Admits Responsibility over the Deaths of 7 Civilians in Somalia

The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has admitted responsibility for the deaths of seven civilians in Somalia.

AMISOM together with the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) formed a six-member Board of Inquiry to look into the matter.

The civilians lost their lives on August 10, 2021.

Their deaths occurred when AMISOM forces reacted to an ambush by Al-Qaeda militants in Golweyn village, around 90kms from Mogadishu.

On October 21, AMISOM published a report from the board of inquiry admitting that its forces killed the civilians.

During the August clash, one AMISOM officer lost his life while another one was injured.

AMISOM now promises to hold the officers responsible for killing the civilians to account.

The officers will appear before a Court Martial.
