ATMIS to Implement Somalia Mandate in Four Phases

The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) intends to implement its mandate in four phases.

The organization, which has taken over the implementation of the African Union Commission (AUC) mandate from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), announced this on April 20.

In its latest update, ATMIS declared that it would implement the mandate while adhering to Somalia’s transitional plan.

The first of the four phases would be reconfiguration.

Secondly, ATMIS would then focus on not only shaping but also clearing operations while handing over some Forward Operating Bases (FOBS) to Somali security forces.

In the third phase, ATMIS would hand over all remaining FOBS to Somalia.

Lastly, the AU organization would withdraw its troops from Somalia while liquidating all its assets and operations.
