MOGADISHU — Somalia’s Ministry of Internal Security and the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) have vowed complete dedication to freeing the nation from the Al-Shabaab insurgency, following a series of high-level diplomatic meetings and successful frontline offensives.
Diplomatic Coordination for Lasting Peace
In Mogadishu, Somalia’s Minister of Internal Security, General Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail (Fartaag), recently held strategic talks with El Hadj Ibrahima Diene, the African Union’s Special Envoy to Somalia. The discussions heavily centered on improving security collaboration, sustaining vital support for the AU mission, and launching joint initiatives to deeply stabilize the nation.
Minister Fartaag expressed profound gratitude to the African Union for its indispensable role in supporting the Somali government. In turn, Ambassador Diene confirmed the AU’s steadfast dedication to achieving enduring peace. This diplomatic exchange, also attended by the National Security Advisor and the Director General of the Ministry of Internal Security, builds directly upon recent agreements to fast-track the Security Transition Plan.
Frontline Success in Lower Shabelle
The diplomatic progress in the capital is actively mirroring operational success on the battlefield. AUSSOM Force Commander Sam Kavuma recently conducted a field visit to evaluate the combat preparedness of frontline troops following the successful liberation of Mubarak and Durasalaam in the Lower Shabelle region.
These two strategic locations had previously functioned as vital strongholds and sanctuaries for Al-Shabaab militants. Owiny Akena, Battle Group 44 commander and operation leader, confirmed that both towns now remain securely under the joint forces’ control.
“Through hard work, perseverance, and dedication, we stand together to eradicate Al-Shabaab and ensure a safer future for all Somalis,” Commander Kavuma announced. He strongly urged the Ugandan contingent under AUSSOM and the Somali National Armed Forces to maintain exceptional standards of professionalism, morale, and discipline while executing their mission objectives.
Furthermore, Kavuma emphasized that alongside clearing the militant threat, AUSSOM is actively working with the Somali government and international partners to ensure that crucial humanitarian aid is safely delivered to the newly liberated areas.
