The police unit of the African Union (AU) has received a fleet of new vehicles that it hopes to use to boost security in Somalia during the upcoming elections.
AU’s police unit is part of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) troops.
The unit received tons of equipment that include five armored personnel carriers (APCs). Others are the six armored Toyota Land Cruisers.
AMISOM’s police unit received these vehicles with the help of the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS).
The organization announced that it would use the vehicles in conjunction with the Formed Police Units (FPU), which provides the Somali Police Force (SPF) with operational support.
Simon Mulongo, the Deputy Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (DSRCC), inspected the vehicles before handing them over to AMISOM’s Police Unit.
On August 5, he delivered the vehicles to Augustine Magnus Kailie, who serves as both AMISOM’s Police Commissioner and the Assistant Inspector General of Police.
