Completion of the Construction of the Berbera Corridor Delayed

Abdilahi Abokor, the Minister of Transport and Roads Development in Somaliland, has said that the construction of the Berbera Corridor is likely to experience a few delays.

Abokor has indicated that the construction of the Corridor requires four more months for completion.

The company responsible for constructing the Corridor submitted a report to the transport ministry giving reasons for the delay.

According to the transport ministry, all the construction works along the Berbera road were to end by May 2020.

Consequently, with the postponement, expectation is now rife that the road would only be able to serve the public from September 2020.

President Muse Bihi Abdi launched the construction.

Abokor says the extension has been occasioned by various factors that include the torrential rains that have hit the country.

Lack of adequate materials has also contributed to the delay as has the long-distance trips to access stores that sell building materials.

Furthermore, the size of the project has made it impossible for the contractor to rush through it, as that could give room to shoddy work.

Berbera Corridor is strategic and essential as it serves as the trading link between the port city and Togwajale, a dry port city.
