NISA Captures Nine Al-Shabaab Operatives Planning Attacks in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU — The National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) has arrested nine suspected Al-Shabaab operatives who were planning to carry out security-related attacks in Mogadishu and surrounding areas, according to an official statement released on Friday, August 7, 2026.

The suspects were reportedly operating covertly in the districts of Garasbaaley, Kaxda, and parts of Ceelasha Biyaha. Four of the individuals were part of an interconnected network involved in planning terrorist activities aimed at harming Somali civilians and destabilising the capital.

NISA intelligence units had been monitoring the movements and activities of the suspects for some time. Following surveillance and intelligence gathering, security forces were able to apprehend each suspect at their respective locations. Investigations are currently ongoing, and the suspects are expected to be handed over to judicial authorities to face legal proceedings.

Counter-Terrorism Operations Intensify

The arrests come as part of an ongoing effort by Somali security forces to disrupt militant networks in Mogadishu and the surrounding regions. The capital has experienced sporadic attacks by Al-Shabaab, which continues to pose a significant threat despite sustained counter-terrorism operations across the country. NISA recently eliminated eight Al-Shabaab militants, including two commanders, in the Middle Shabelle region, targeting a cell responsible for mines and rocket attacks in the Basra area.

The operation is likely part of a more significant security sweep that comes after recent victories by Somali forces in different regions, including Jubaland. Joint operations between Jubaland State forces and the elite Somali Danab Advanced Infantry Brigade have intensified, with coordinated offensives targeting militant bases and logistical hubs in the Dhasheeg-Waamo area of Lower Juba.

The United States has reaffirmed its support for Somali forces, with U.S. Africa Command engaging with Somali military leadership on counter-terrorism operations and capacity building.

While the arrest of nine suspected Al-Shabaab operatives represents a tactical success for NISA, it also highlights the persistent threat posed by militant networks operating within Mogadishu and its environs. The government’s ability to translate these arrests into successful prosecutions and to disrupt the broader militant network will be a critical test of its counter-terrorism capabilities. Furthermore, while the arrests are a welcome development, they must be accompanied by continued efforts to address the underlying drivers of radicalisation and recruitment, including poverty, lack of opportunity, and governance deficits.
