The President of the regional state of Puntland is in Bosaso while his colleagues attend the National Consultative Conference (NCC) in Mogadishu.
The Puntland government, under President Said Abdullahi Deni, has maintained its position of refusing to recognize the authority of the Federal Government of Somalia since April 2024, following disagreements over constitutional reforms approved by the Somali Parliament.
Puntland, led by President Deni, has been advocating for greater autonomy and federalism within Somalia.
The ongoing tensions between the Federal Government and Puntland stem from disagreements over power distribution, resource-sharing, and the approach to constitutional reforms.
While federal leaders are meeting in Mogadishu today, President Deni’s return to Bosaso, where he was warmly welcomed, highlights Puntland’s independent stance in the ongoing federal-state relations.
NCC kicked off on Wednesday in the capital city.
Apart from President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia, others present at the conference included Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre and his deputy Salah Jama.
All regional state leaders with the exception of Deni were present on the first day of the NCC too.
