Denmark Reaffirms Support for Free and Independent Media in Somalia

Mogadishu, Somalia – During a roundtable discussion with Somali media representatives in Mogadishu on Tuesday, the Deputy Head of Denmark’s Mission to Somalia and Head of Cooperation, Gertrud Kummel Birk, reaffirmed her country’s unwavering commitment to promoting free, independent, and critical journalism in Somalia.

Speaking at the event, Birk emphasized that a vibrant and independent press is essential for building a democratic society and ensuring government accountability.

She highlighted Denmark’s ongoing support for Somali media development, freedom of expression, and journalist safety, describing journalism as a “cornerstone of democracy.”

“Independent media plays a vital role in ensuring transparency, promoting dialogue, and strengthening trust between the public and institutions. Denmark remains committed to supporting Somali journalists and media organizations in their pursuit of truth and accountability,” said Birk.

The roundtable brought together journalists, media leaders, and civil society actors to discuss challenges facing the Somali media landscape, including press freedom restrictions, security threats, and limited access to resources.

Participants welcomed Denmark’s continued engagement and urged international partners to maintain support for journalist training, media capacity-building, and protection measures amid ongoing risks faced by reporters across the country.

This latest engagement is part of Denmark’s broader development cooperation in Somalia, focusing on governance, human rights, and inclusive political participation.
