Despair as Talks between Somaliland Government and Opposition Collapse

Somaliland is in despair after the talks between the government and the opposition collapsed.

Hersi Haji Ali Hassan and Faisal Ali Warabe confirmed this latest development on July 19.

Hassan is the leader of the opposition Waddani Party. Warabe leads another opposition party that was involved in the talks, UCID.

The two opposition leaders accused the government of refusing to allow mediators to do their job.

The talks attracted representatives from the ruling party, opposition parties, and the speakers of the two chambers of parliament.

Speaker Saleban Mohamoud Adan of the House of Elders and Speaker Abdirisaq Khalif of the House of the Representatives were active in the talks.

The talks took place at the residence of Speaker Adan on the morning of July 19.

Speaker Adan and Speaker Khalif were the mediators.

Meanwhile, the government side also accused the opposition of walking away from the talks without any valid reason.

Mohamed Kahin Ahmed blamed the opposition politicians of taking off on their own. He is the Minister of Interior and Deputy Chairman of the ruling Kulmiye Party.
