Egyptian Forces in Final Preparations Ahead of Deployment to Somalia

Egypt’s military forces are finalizing preparations for their deployment to Somalia under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

This mission, which will officially commence in January 2025, marks a continuation of African Union efforts to stabilize Somalia and enhance its security infrastructure as the AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) transitions out.

Egypt, alongside Djibouti, is among the first countries to confirm troop contributions for AUSSOM.

The mission will have a troop strength of under 12,000 personnel, reflecting a scaled-down yet targeted approach to supporting Somalia’s security forces and maintaining regional stability.

This deployment underscores Egypt’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s territorial integrity and fighting threats posed by extremist groups like Al-Shabaab.

Both Egypt and Djibouti bring strategic expertise and geographical importance to the mission, reinforcing the collaborative nature of this initiative among African nations.
