Ethiopia’s Somali State Elects First Female Parliamentary Speaker

The Somali State of Ethiopia has elected its first female speaker for the regional parliament.

Ayaan Abdi won elections that parliament held for the Office of the Speaker.

Abdi has now created history in the region.

She was elected during elections that also saw Mustafa Omer Agjar reelected as the President of the Somali State.

The regional parliament voted for the new leaders on October 17.

These elections took place in the middle of the ongoing clashes in Tigray between regional forces and the Ethiopian army.
