FAO Seeking $39 Million to Fight Locust Menace in East Africa

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has embarked on a search for over $39 million to fight the locust menace in East Africa.

FAO already disbursed funds for efforts aimed at eradicating desert locusts from the region.

On January 20, FAO said that it needs more funds. Specifically, the funds would help to eradicate the menace in Somalia, Kenya, and Ethiopia.

Yemen too would benefit from the new round of funding to eradicate the locusts.

The region has been struggling with desert locust infestation since the end of 2019 and the situation does not seem to be getting any better.

Farmers in the affected countries in the Horn of Africa region are staring at huge losses.

The initial funding set aside for this campaign runs out in March 2021.

FAO has partnered with several agencies and the governments of the respective nations to conduct aerial spraying in Kenya, Somalia, and Ethiopia.

The United Nations agency relies on 28 anti-locust aircraft in the region to help its aerial spraying programs.
