Former Somalia President Asks if Ethiopia Cancelled Controversial MoU with Somaliland

Former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has issued a statement highlighting his concerns over the improved relations Somalia now enjoys with Ethiopia.

His comments raise significant concerns about Ethiopia’s intentions regarding the controversial Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Somaliland.

Ex-President Ahmed questioned whether Ethiopia has cancelled the controversial MoU it signed with Somaliland for seaport access on January 2 last year.

His question about why Ethiopia would seek Somalia’s sea access instead of using Djibouti, Kenya, or Eritrea highlights regional tensions, particularly regarding territorial disputes and strategic interests.

The MoU between Ethiopia and Somaliland, which bypasses the Somali federal government, has been a contentious issue, with many questioning its legality and the potential consequences for Somalia’s sovereignty.
