The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) warned that Al-Shabaab and other militia groups could take advantage of the prevailing political instability in the country.
Hassan Hundubey, the Minister of National Security, issued this warning on April 27.
His warning comes at a time when the country has witnessed rising cases of political instability.
In the last few days, Mogadishu has been the scene of intense fighting between troops loyal to FGS and those opposed to President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo.
The latter are up in arms against the decision by the House of Representatives to extend Farmaajo’s term, which expired on February 8, by a further two years.
Hundubey warned that the government would crack down hard on people who exhibit the “behaviors of militias.”
He further reassured the public that the government is in complete control of the situation.
The national security minister said that there are enough government troops to ensure that Somalia remains a peaceful state.
