Former Somalia President Condemns Decision to Postpone NIEC’s Parliamentary Briefing

Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, a former President of Somalia, has condemned the decision to postpone the parliamentary briefing by the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC).

The postponement followed news that the Federal Parliament of Somalia would now reconvene on June 6 after the recess.

Initially, parliament was to reconvene towards the end of this month.

Consequently, NIEC had announced plans to brief parliament and the entire nation on the plans it had made towards the upcoming elections.

Somalia is scheduled to conduct its polls towards the end of the year.

The decision to postpone parliamentary sessions to June means that the earliest that NIEC could conduct its briefings would be a month from now.

Sharif Sheikh labeled the postponement a huge disappointment. He also asked the country to watch out because President Mohamed Farmaajo could be on the verge of extending his term.
