Former US Envoy Warns Clan Divisions Threaten Somalia’s Stability

Mogadishu, Somalia – Former United States Ambassador to Somalia, Larry Andre, has issued a stark warning about the enduring threat posed by clan rivalries and political infighting to Somalia’s peace and stability.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Andre said these internal divisions remain “significant obstacles,” despite the recurring potential for hope under new leadership.

Referring to the deadly election disputes of 2022, Andre noted, “Despite attempts at unity, the persistent influence of clan divisions continues to threaten progress toward peace and stability in Somalia.”

His comments come as the Horn of Africa nation faces renewed political tensions over electoral frameworks.

Washington has also expressed concern that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s increasing focus on internal political maneuvering could undermine national security efforts.

As Somalia nears a critical turning point, Andre’s warning underscores the fragile nature of its political landscape and the urgent need for inclusive governance and consensus-building.
