Voters in Italy have elected a former refugee from Somalia as one of its newest councilors.
Abdullahi Ahmed Moalim left Mogadishu in 2008.
This week, Italian voters elected councilor in Turin.
Consequently, Moalim became the first immigrant from Somalia to be elected a Turin councilor in roughly 25 years.
He won the elections with 1,112 votes.
Moalim won the elections roughly five years after Italy granted him citizenship in 2016.
The former refugee promised to prioritize the fight against Islamophobia.
