Jubbaland Retaliates by Issuing a Warrant of Arrest for Somali President

Tensions between the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and Jubbaland went a notch higher after the latter issued a warrant of arrest for President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

The increased tensions between them underscore the challenges in federal-state relations.

If the arrest warrant for President Mohamud by Jubbaland is confirmed, it represents a significant escalation following Mogadishu’s earlier move to seek the arrest of Jubbaland’s President Ahmed Madobe on alleged treason charges.

These developments highlight the fragile relationship between the federal government and regional states, particularly Jubbaland.

The situation is likely rooted in disagreements over power-sharing, resource allocation, and differing political allegiances, further exacerbated by Somalia’s complex security and political landscape.

This clash risks undermining national unity and ongoing efforts against Al-Shabaab, which demand coordination between the federal government and all federal member states.

The involvement of neutral mediators, including elders, civil society, or international partners, may be necessary to de-escalate the situation and promote dialogue.
