Online Petition Launched to Stop Parliament from Debating Controversial Sexual Bill

An online petition has been launched to stop Federal Parliament from debating the controversial sexual bill that has been tabled before it.

The controversial bill, which has been dubbed the “Intercourse Bill”, has shocked the entire country and astounded Somalia’s international partners.

According to the petition on change.org, the new bill is likely to lead to the violation of human rights for women, children, and young girls.

Further, the online petition indicates that the Sexual Offences Bill (SOB), which the cabinet had ratified in 2018, is much better than the one tabled in parliament over the weekend.

The new bill has made several amendments on the Sexual Offences Bill.

Analysts and human rights bodies and activists have pointed out that the amendments sets a dangerous precedent in a country renowned for excessive gender-based sexual violence.

Currently, around 5,300 out of a target of 7,500 people have signed the petition that urges parliament to stop the bill.
