President Mohamud Signs New Somali Labor Code into Law

On Tuesday, Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud signed the new Somali Labor Code into law, following its approval by both chambers of the Federal Parliament.

This landmark legislation replaces the outdated Law No. 65, which had been in effect since October 25, 1972.

The previous law no longer aligned with Somalia’s constitutional framework, international labor standards, or the country’s human rights obligations.

The new Labor Code aims to modernize labor regulations, ensuring they are in line with contemporary legal and human rights standards, and better protect workers’ rights in Somalia.

This move reflects Somalia’s commitment to upholding international labor norms and advancing social and economic reforms.
