MOGADISHU — The Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hamza Abdi Barre, has issued a strong commendation to the elite Danab Special Forces and Jubbaland regional security forces following a successful military operation in the Lower Juba region.
The Prime Minister lauded the combat preparedness of the joint forces, who effectively neutralized a major assault by Al-Shabaab militants on the strategically important coastal town of Kudhaa.
Intense Confrontation
Hostilities commenced before dawn on Wednesday when militant groups launched a coordinated ambush aimed at seizing the town. According to military authorities, the fighting concluded early Thursday when government forces encircled and defeated the attackers.
The operation featured Somalia’s U.S.-trained Danab commandos operating alongside Jubbaland’s Darwish forces. Commanders overseeing the defensive confirmed that the militants were completely expelled from the area. Security officials subsequently presented the bodies of multiple combatants, including high-ranking members killed during the confrontations, alongside a cache of weapons and military equipment captured in the operation.
Federal Support and Strategic Value
In his official statement, Prime Minister Barre highlighted the bravery and professional coordination demonstrated by the troops. He noted that this victory serves as clear evidence of the enhanced collaboration between Somali National Army (SNA) and regional security sectors.
“The courage and expertise displayed by our soldiers indicate the advancements achieved in enhancing national security,” the Prime Minister stated.
Kudhaa, situated approximately 70 kilometers southwest of the port city of Kismayo, holds considerable strategic importance due to its coastal position. Securing this area is essential for disrupting maritime supply routes frequently exploited by insurgent groups for logistics.
The successful defense of the town reinforces the Federal Government’s wider campaign to protect key economic hubs in southern Somalia and deny the “Kharijites” (a government term for Al-Shabaab) any foothold in the region.
