Puntland Threatens Split as Relations with Mogadishu Worsen

Puntland has threatened to pull out from Somalia if Mogadishu fails to abide by the terms stipulated in the Provisional Constitution.

The threat comes in the wake of worsening relations between two of Somalia’s levels of government.

Puntland’s threat to split also comes at a time when Mogadishu has been trying to bring back Somaliland to the fold.

According to Puntland, the Federal Government of Somalia has violated the Provisional Constitution, thus justifying its calls for secession.

On Tuesday, Puntland issued the split threat at the end of a 3-day consultative conference in Garowe.

The government of Puntland advised Mogadishu to stop bypassing and neglecting the dictates of the Provisional Constitution.
