MUBAARAK, LOWER SHABELLE: The Somali National Army’s elite Gorgor Commando First Unit, working alongside Turkish military advisers from the TURKSOM training mission, carried out a major humanitarian relief operation on Thursday, distributing essential food supplies to vulnerable families in the Mubarak district of Lower Shabelle. The joint team delivered flour, rice, sugar, and cooking oil to residents in the newly secured area, marking a strategic shift toward integrating civilian support into post‑combat stabilization efforts.
Lieutenant Colonel Sahid Jama Farah, the commanding officer, personally supervised the distribution and engaged with local community leaders and residents. He stressed that the military remains committed both to protecting the nation through force and to ensuring the immediate well‑being of the population. “The army is not only here to fight the enemy but also to stand by the people,” he said. The operation reflects the Federal Government’s “Liberation and Stability” approach, which seeks to replace the vacuum left by defeated insurgents with practical, life‑sustaining aid. Local officials expressed deep appreciation to national media, highlighting significant improvements in both security and quality of life since federal troops established full control of the area.
The Gorgor Commandos, trained and equipped with significant Turkish support, have been at the forefront of Somalia’s counter‑insurgency campaigns. The unit has previously conducted targeted security operations against Al‑Shabaab cells in Middle Shabelle, and their involvement in humanitarian distribution signals a broader counter‑insurgency doctrine that blends kinetic action with community engagement. The Mubarak district, located along key agricultural routes in Lower Shabelle, has been a strategic focal point for both the army and the militants, and stabilizing the area is essential for securing regional supply lines.
Turkey’s military mission in Somalia, known as TURKSOM, has been a cornerstone of the strategic partnership between Mogadishu and Ankara. The two countries recently renewed their defence cooperation agreement, reinforcing military training, equipment support, and intelligence collaboration. Turkey maintains its largest overseas military training facility in Mogadishu, where thousands of Somali soldiers have been trained. Turkish advisers have also been embedded with Somali special forces, including the Gorgor Commandos, providing tactical guidance and logistical support for complex operations. The renewed military pact ensures continued Turkish presence and assistance in building Somalia’s security architecture.
By controlling key agricultural routes such as Mubarak and building public confidence through immediate assistance, the Federal Government and its international partners aim to establish foundations for sustained economic growth and full government authority throughout Lower Shabelle. Defence cooperation with Turkey has also extended to military procurement, with Somali forces receiving advanced equipment and technical support to enhance their operational capabilities. As stabilization operations continue, the military’s dual focus on combat readiness and civilian relief is expected to expand to other areas liberated from Al‑Shabaab control.
