Elite Gorgor Commandos Return to Mogadishu After Completing Three-Month Turkish Training

MOGADISHU — The Commander of the 1st Division of the Somali National Army’s Gorgor Special Forces, Colonel Sahid Jama Farah (Jareere), has welcomed a group of officers and soldiers from the 21st Brigade at the airport following the completion of their military training in Türkiye.

The returning troops, who are part of the elite Gorgor Commandos, completed an approximately three-month advanced military training program in Manisa, Türkiye. The training focused on combat skills, military discipline, unit cohesion, and operational readiness.

The graduation ceremony was held on August 8, 2026, in Manisa, attended by Somali Land Forces Commander Brigadier General Sahal Abdullahi Omar and his Turkish counterpart, General Metin Tokel. The two commanders jointly addressed the newly trained Gorgor forces and urged them to fulfill the responsibilities for which they had been trained as they return to their home country.

The 21st Battalion, 1st Division of the Gorgor Commandos is the first fully formed Gorgor unit to complete its training at a single location and within a single timeframe.

Deepening Somalia-Türkiye Defence Partnership

The training is part of the expanding defence partnership between Somalia and Türkiye, which has emerged as a key security partner for the Somali government. The two countries signed a 10-year defence agreement in 2024, committing Ankara to continued support for Somalia’s security capacity development.

Turkey has been providing training and military equipment to Somalia’s Gorgor Commandos as part of the defence cooperation between the two countries. Ankara operates the TURKSOM military training facility in Mogadishu, established in 2017, where thousands of Somali soldiers have received military training.

The training relationship has since expanded beyond basic military instruction to include specialised training and broader security cooperation. The Gorgor forces are among Somalia’s most specialised combat units and have played a prominent role in government-led military operations against Al-Shabaab.

The graduation of the Gorgor troops follows similar training milestones for Somalia’s other elite units, including the Danab Special Forces.

Strategic Significance

The graduation comes at a critical juncture for Somalia’s security transition. The federal government has been seeking to expand the capacity of its forces as it assumes greater responsibility for national security and sustains military pressure on Al-Shabaab, the militant group that has waged an insurgency for more than a decade.

The training programmes in Türkiye have provided Somali personnel with exposure to advanced military practices, leadership, and specialised operations. Officials said the continued training reflects the two countries’ commitment to strengthening Somalia’s national defence institutions and developing forces capable of assuming greater responsibility for the country’s security.

Critical Note

While the return of the 21st Gorgor Brigade from advanced training in Türkiye represents a significant achievement in Somalia’s military modernisation efforts, the effectiveness of these units will ultimately be measured by their performance on the battlefield. Despite years of international support and training, Somali forces continue to face significant challenges in sustaining operations against Al-Shabaab, including logistical constraints, intelligence gaps, and command-and-control weaknesses.

The reliance on international partners such as Türkiye, while valuable, also raises questions about the sustainability of Somalia’s security sector reforms in the absence of continued external support. The government would be well advised to ensure that the expansion of elite units is accompanied by broader reforms to the regular army, including improvements in logistics, intelligence, and institutional capacity. Without such systemic changes, the country risks over-relying on a small number of highly trained units while the wider military remains under-equipped and under-prepared.
