The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has been asked to reduce registration fees for female candidates vying for parliamentary seats.
On January 13, women legislators urged leaders of the Federal Member States (FMS) and FGS to reduce registration fees for women interested in vying in the upcoming elections.
The legislators who spoke were from the House of Representatives (Lower House) and Senate (Upper House).
Further, they reminded the government at the federal and regional level to reserve and implement the 30 percent quota for women representatives.
Somalia is preparing for parliamentary elections in January 2021.
Presidential elections are to follow in February 2021.
Last year, the country’s political leadership signed a pre-election agreement on September 17, 2020 declaring their commitment to increase women representation in parliament.
A few days ago, Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble guaranteed women that 30% of elective seats would be reserved for them.
