The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has urged the African Union (AU) not to withdraw additional forces from the East African country.
Consequently, AU acceded to Somalia’s request.
With that, AU will not withdraw the more than 2,000 additional forces that are now in the country.
Instead, the organization would wait until the deadline of December 2024 which it had already agreed upon.
Some 2,000 additional forces, which operate in Somalia as part of the AU Peace and Security Council, were to be pulled out by December 31, 2022.
The pullout was in line with the AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) Phase 1 Reconfiguration Plan.
Instead, the pullout is now set for June 30, 2022.
