Somalia Officially Starts 2-Year Term as UNSC Member

Somalia has officially begun its two-year term as a member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2025-2026 cycle.

It joins four other newly elected members—Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, and Panama.

Somalia assumes the third African seat on the Council, alongside Algeria and Sierra Leone, succeeding Mozambique.

This milestone highlights Somalia’s growing diplomatic influence and its opportunity to shape decisions on international peace and security.

Somalia’s focus is likely to include counterterrorism, regional stability, and addressing climate-related security risks, leveraging its unique perspective and experiences.

Its presence will also amplify African priorities and strengthen multilateral cooperation during its tenure.
