Somalia Parliament Renews IDs of MPs

The Federal Parliament of Somalia has renewed the identification documents (IDs) of Members of Parliament (MPs).

Parliament renewed the IDs on January 4, 2021.

The IDs had expired after the term of the current parliament expired in December 2020.

Forthwith, the MPs were no longer expected to be on duty.

However, that changed when the MPs met on the morning of the first day of the week and agreed to renew their IDs.

They took this move concurrently with the decision to extend their term in office to the end of December 2021.

These two decisions could hamper the ongoing efforts to find solutions for the elections impasse.

The impasse has made it impossible for Somalia to hold timely parliamentary elections.
