Geneva – The Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mahamuud Moallim, delivered a keynote address at the 8th Global Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction 2025 (GPDRR2025), held in Geneva from June 2 to 6.
The forum, hosted by the Government of Switzerland and organized by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), brought together 2,700 delegates from 133 countries.
In his address, Commissioner Moallim highlighted Somalia’s efforts and progress in disaster risk reduction despite facing complex humanitarian and climate challenges.
He emphasized the country’s commitment to building resilience and strengthening early warning systems.
The event served as a key moment to evaluate progress since the Political Declaration adopted by the UN General Assembly in May 2023.
Delegates reviewed the recommendations and shared practical solutions to fast-track implementation efforts worldwide.
Somalia’s participation underscored its growing role in global disaster risk governance and its ongoing work to protect vulnerable communities from the impacts of climate-induced and man-made disasters.
