Somalia Teeters on the Edge of Famine, OCHA Declares

Somalia is teetering on the edge of famine.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) issued a statement in that regard on Monday.

Ian Ridley, the Head of the OCHA Somalia office, said that close to 8 million people in Somalia need humanitarian assistance.

He added that over 1 million people in Somalia now live as internally displaced persons (IDPs).

Ridley said this while speaking to Voice of America (VOA) Somali.

The Head of the OCHA Somalia office blamed the current situation on the four consecutive failed rainy seasons that Somalia has experienced since October 2020.

In his view, there is a likelihood that Somalia will experience yet another failed rainy season between October and December.

Consequently, all signs point to a famine.
