Somaliland Opposition Leaders Visit 62 Detainees at Mandhera Prison

Opposition leaders in Somaliland visited detainees at Mandhera Prison.

Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro, the leader of the opposition Waddani Party, led his colleagues in visiting the prison.

For two weeks, Mandhera Prison held 62 detainees.

Irro and his colleagues condemned the detention of the prisoners most of whom were underage schoolboys.

He condemned authorities for failing to tell the boys why they were in detention.

The boys were arrested in Burao on November 13 without any arrest warrant.

Immediately afterward, they were taken to the Sahil region to ensure that they would remain inaccessible to their parents, schoolmates, teachers, or relatives.

Irro described the entire situation as a “gross violation of the detainees’ human and civil rights.”
