Somaliland Parliament Quashes Women Quota Law

Somaliland parliament has quashed the law on women quota that it was to debate and pass following intervention from the Sub-Committee on Internal Affairs and Security.

The sub-committee forwarded an amendment it had prepared on the Electoral Law.

In it, the sub-committee repealed some of the proposed amendments, such as the one on increasing the number of women legislators.

Members of the sub-committee called the proposed law “unconstitutional.”

They said that all citizens of Somaliland were created equal thus no need for increasing quota on women representation for the upcoming elections.

Abdillahi Balaki, a Member of Parliament (MP) and the Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Internal Affairs and Security, said that their decision is supported by Islamic Law.

He said the Islamic Law does not support discrimination based on gender.
