In a ceremony organized by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) in Mogadishu, U.S. Ambassador to Somalia, Richard Riley, participated in the official handover of advanced Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment to Somalia’s elite Danab Special Forces.
This milestone event marks a significant boost to the operational capacity and accountability systems of the U.S.-trained counterterrorism unit within the Somali National Army (SNA).
The newly provided ICT equipment is designed to enhance Danab’s command-and-control capabilities, improve mission planning, and ensure greater transparency in its operations.
Ambassador Riley reiterated the United States’ steadfast support for Somalia’s security sector, emphasizing that the investment reflects Washington’s long-term commitment to regional peace and the fight against violent extremism.
Since 2007, the United States has committed approximately $782 million to bolster Somalia’s national defense, particularly the development and sustainability of the Danab forces.
This ongoing partnership highlights U.S. confidence in the Somali government’s efforts to build a capable, professional, and accountable military force.
The handover comes at a pivotal moment as Somalia works to take greater ownership of its national security amid the phased drawdown of African Union forces and the transition to Somali-led operations.
